Tesco limits shoppers to 16 items per product in stores
Tesco caps some products at 16 per customer visit

Tesco shoppers may find themselves unable to buy everything they need, due to a little-known policy. The retail giant has put restrictions in place to stop customers from purchasing excessive quantities of the same item in a single transaction.

As the UK's largest supermarket chain, Tesco operates in excess of 3,000 stores nationwide. Millions of people depend on Tesco for their weekly groceries, with approximately 20 million households holding a Tesco Clubcard, yet some customers may be unaware of a "maximum purchase quantity" restriction that applies to a wide range of products.

Which Products Are Affected?

This rule stops shoppers from exceeding a set limit per item during any one visit. While the maximum quantity differs depending on the product, many items are currently limited to 16 per shop, according to Tesco's website. These include:

  • Tesco Medium Free Range Eggs 12 Pack
  • Tesco Medium Sliced White Bread 800g
  • Tesco British Semi Skimmed Milk 2.272L (four pints)
  • Eastmans Wafer Thin Cooked Ham Slices 400g
  • Creamfields Mature White Cheddar 400g
  • Hearty Food Co. Penne Pasta 500g
  • Tesco Small Bananas 6 Pack
  • Tesco Ripe & Ready Avocado

Tesco Explains the Policy

On its website, Tesco explains: "To ensure availability of all our products customers may be limited to a maximum number of items."

Tesco also advises customers that they are able to check stock levels at their nearest store before setting off, which can be done via the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app.

New App Features

Earlier this year, Tesco introduced a significant update to its app, unveiling a new AI-driven Meal Planner for a select group of customers. The tool can be utilised for meal and recipe inspiration, weekly meal planning, checking what ingredients you might require and subsequently adding these directly to your online basket or shopping list.

Upon its launch in August, Tesco stated: "It's currently being launched as a beta, which means we're making it available to selected customers first so we can learn, improve and make sure the experience is working well before making it available more widely."

Should you be amongst those selected for the beta trial, you'll be able to access the Meal Planner via the Tesco app.
