The new business taking over the former Liverpool Hooters venue has confirmed its opening date. Tavern Co Social will launch at New Zealand House on Water Street in Liverpool city centre in September, with the team posting on social media: “Another day closer. 09.20.26.”
From Hooters to a fresh concept
Hooters occupied the historic building from November 2022 until January 2026. The venue had a turbulent period, including staff complaints that tips and service charge were being kept by the company to pay bills. In light of this, the team behind it believed a fresh start was needed.
Director Barry Morris, who took over after the original operator went into administration, confirmed the franchisee restaurant would close on Sunday, January 11. He had initially promised a concept would fill the city centre site, with him still at its helm.
At the time, he told the ECHO: “After a very difficult year for the business, including the loss of key signage and the disruption around Liverpool parade day, I stepped in to take over day-to-day control in an effort to stabilise the venue.
“As a Scouse family man, I want the venue to better reflect Liverpool — its people, its culture, and its love of sport and hospitality. I believe now is the right time to move away from the Hooters brand and create a more inclusive concept that locals can be proud of.”
However, on Thursday, January 29, Barry confirmed the concept he had in mind would not come to fruition.
Award-winning brand expands to the city centre
Posters have been teasing the arrival of Tavern Co Social, promising customers a famous breakfast and brunch offering. The posters added: “Great food, freshly brewed, live sports, good vibes, friends and family.”
Although new to the city centre, the brand is already established on Smithdown Road, where it was twice named the UK’s Best Breakfast for its full English offering. The Tavern Co was set up by Keith Gurney, who moved to Liverpool in 1986 from the USA. He first travelled to Europe with university friends who were on football scholarships from Liverpool.
The business opened in 1990 and at the time consisted of just the bar area where customers today wait to be seated. Over the last three decades, it has developed into an award-winning restaurant.
New ownership and relaunch
The lease for the building housing The Tavern Co on Smithdown Road was taken up by the JSM Group, also known as the Pub Invest Group, in September 2023. Following the acquisition, the restaurant was refurbished and relaunched under new ownership.
