Tan Hill Inn, the UK's highest pub, is opening its first outlet outside its North Yorkshire home at St James' STACK in Newcastle. The pub, which sits at 1,732ft above sea level on isolated moorland in Swaledale, will serve its signature dishes including Yorkshire pudding wraps and fish and chips.
First expansion in 300-year history
The move marks the first time in the pub's 300-year history that it has shared its unique offering beyond Yorkshire. Owner Andrew Hields sees the venture as a way to secure the pub's future amid challenging conditions at altitude.
Tan Hill Inn has faced difficulties for a succession of owners over the years, despite its fame attracting tourists. It has featured in major movies and TV shows, including North East-shot detective drama Vera, and a memorable advert. In 2025, deep snow drifts left customers stranded there for days.
Owner's vision for survival
Andrew Hields, who took over as co-owner in 2017 with investment in the business, said: “Owning a pub with as much history and as well known as the Tan Hill Inn comes with a level of responsibility. That includes ensuring that it is able to survive in an ever-challenging hospitality climate, particularly given the increasing overheads on site.”
He added: “Expanding the Tan Hill Inn experience beyond its Yorkshire location helps us ensure its survival and we are very grateful to STACK for the opportunity to be part of their exciting concept.”
Street food experience at STACK
As a new addition to the food outlets at St James' STACK, Tan Hill will turn its pub grub dishes into more of a street food experience. Gemma Dishman, director of strategy and development for STACK, said: “We are always looking to bring in traders who will add to the mix of street food we offer so that we have something for everyone.”
She added: “Having the food from a venue as well known and iconic as the Tan Hill Inn will bring something fresh and we are delighted that they have chosen STACK as the first outlet as part of their brand growth. We are sure it will be really well received by our customers.”
