Tammy Girl, the nostalgic high street fashion brand beloved by 90s and 2000s teens, made a brief comeback in 2022 with an exclusive ASOS collection, but four years on it has disappeared from the online retailer once more. The brand, which first launched in 1975 as a youth-focused spin-off of womenswear label Etam, bridged the gap between children's and adult clothing, making it a go-to destination for tweens and teens.
Its most memorable budget-friendly items included crop tops, cargo pants, jelly shoes, and inflatable bubble bags. Shoppers would queue for butterfly clips, stretchy chokers, and tiny bags just big enough for a Nokia flip phone. Before online shopping, queues would snake up the high street just to see the colourful collections.
From Etam to BHS and Beyond
Tammy Girl remained part of Etam until 2005, when the company sold its UK operations and the brand was taken over by British Home Stores (BHS). Standalone stores disappeared, and teens could only shop the brand inside the department store. BHS later phased out the brand, and it vanished entirely when BHS closed all its doors in 2016.
In 2022, womenswear retailer Daisy Street purchased the brand and launched a 32-piece Y2K-inspired capsule collection exclusively on ASOS for a six-month partnership. Cropped tops were priced at £15, dresses at £36, and the iconic bubble bag with the Tammy Girl logo returned at £24.
A Quiet Disappearance
During the launch, Daisy Street managing director Tay Singh told Draper: "There’s a six-month exclusivity period from the launch. After those six months have passed, we will offer the brand to further customers in the UK, which would be the likes of Urban Outfitters and House of Fraser." He added: "I do see so much opportunity with the product in a selective range with some of the supermarkets – that’s something that we’re looking to target."
However, four years later, no Tammy Girl collections are available on ASOS, and nothing appears to have gone past the initial collection. The brand's Instagram account hasn't posted in over two and a half years, and there have been no major announcements about subsequent collections since the 2022 revival. Once again, Tammy Girl has disappeared from shopping baskets, though some still hold hope for another return. ASOS has been contacted for comment.
