A woman has spoken of her frustration after customers of a neighbouring car repair shop repeatedly blocked the entrance to her home, leaving her unable to get out of her driveway.
The woman, who lives along a narrow lane, said that since the property next door was converted into a car repair shop, vehicles have been parked in the lane at all hours. She told the owner of the business about the issue, and while he moved the vehicles, the problem persisted at least once or twice a week, including a truck left for a whole weekend and a motorhome that made it difficult for her to get in.
The situation has raised serious concerns for the resident, as her mother, who is in poor health, has needed an ambulance on several occasions. She fears that paramedics would not be able to navigate the driveway if vehicles were obstructing the entrance.
When she confronted the owner, he told her she did not own the laneway and claimed the township did. She said the township has a right-of-way for access to a creek and culvert, but she pays taxes on and maintains the land. She hung up in anger, and her husband later convinced the owner that they do own the land.
The woman is now considering putting up a fence or blocking customers from using her lane to park, which she said would render a large section of the car repair shop's lot useless. She said the owner had "the audacity" to tell her he would keep doing it.
Commenters on Reddit suggested she arrange a towing contract, install an electronic gate, or put up a "no parking" sign and have vehicles towed, warning that the owner would either control his customers or lose business.
