Emily Malia conducted a taste test of supermarket own-brand fish fingers against Birds Eye for the Daily Record, cooking all samples for 12-14 minutes at 200°C in the oven to ensure fairness.
Asda Fish Fingers (£1.12) – 3/5
The classic orange breadcrumbs were crispy and crumbly, but the overall flavour was understated. The fish taste wasn't pronounced, though the texture was melt-in-your-mouth after the crispy coating. Easy to eat in large quantities but not satisfying.
M&S Fish Fingers (£2.50) – 5/5
From the first bite, M&S delivered a robust flavour with satisfying chew. The batter was crispy but thinner than Asda's. At £2.50, they are pricier than Birds Eye but worth every penny in Emily's opinion.
Sainsbury's Fish Fingers (80p) – 2/5
Almost half the thickness of M&S, with a high breadcrumb-to-fish ratio. Flavour was lacking, and texture was neither melt-in-your-mouth nor chewy. Grilling might improve results, but overall a run-of-the-mill experience.
Birds Eye Fish Fingers (£2.10) – 4/5
Visibly slimmer and lighter in colour, but considerably chewier and more flavoursome. The batter was crispier and less crumbly. Emily maintains M&S edges ahead, but Birds Eye is a reliable choice for 40p less.
Tesco Fish Fingers (£1.15) – 4/5
A budget-friendly alternative with a creamy, delicate fish flavour. Melt-in-your-mouth texture with minimal chewiness, but mushier than other options and not as crispy, breaking apart easily.
