Supermarket Bakery Cookie Taste Test: Aldi Beats M&S at 36p Each
Supermarket Bakery Cookie Taste Test: Aldi Wins at 36p Each

In a taste test of supermarket bakery cookies, Aldi's offering was the surprise winner, scoring a perfect 5/5 at just 36p per cookie, beating Marks and Spencer's Milk Chocolate Cookies, which were not available for the test but were previously rated 4/5 by the reviewer.

The comparison, conducted by Deputy Editor Millie Bull, pitted four supermarket bakery cookies against each other, including budget options from Aldi and Sainsbury's, to find the best of the bunch. The M&S cookies, priced at £3.10 for a pack of five (62p each), were deemed overpriced despite their quality.

Aldi's Salted Edge Wins the Day

Aldi's cookies were a genuine surprise, with a great chew and a saltiness that the others lacked. The salty edge gave them a more grown-up flavour, bringing out the cocoa and making them very moreish. While the chocolate wasn't top quality, the reviewer noted that isn't what makes a great cookie, and these beat M&S hands down, with loads of chocolate, a lovely salty-sweet flavour, and the perfect texture.

Co-op and Sainsbury's Ranked Lower

Co-op's Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies, at £1.75 for five (35p each), were really enjoyable with plenty of chocolate and the ideal chewy texture, though slightly on the smaller side. They earned a 3.5/5, not quite level with M&S but much better value.

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference cookies were the priciest of the four and the most premium-feeling, but the texture was too buttery and dry, similar to shortbread. They didn't keep well, becoming crumbly after a day, and the Belgian milk chocolate chunks didn't make much difference to the overall experience. Despite being the biggest cookies in the test, they scored only 2.5/5.

Budget Option Disappoints

Sainsbury's standard Milk Chocolate Cookies, at £1.50 for five (30p each), were the cheapest per cookie but were pretty average, with decent chewiness but light on chocolate and lacking salt. They scored 2/5.

The winner, Aldi, proved that a budget option can outshine the premium brands, offering the best combination of taste, texture, and value at just 36p per cookie.
