Deadline Extended for St Johns Beacon Ideas Due to High Demand
St Johns Beacon Deadline Extended After High Demand

The deadline for submitting proposals for Liverpool's iconic St Johns Beacon has been extended due to an overwhelming number of submissions, the ECHO understands. The landmark, also known as the Radio City Tower, has been vacant since late 2024 when radio station Hits Radio (formerly Radio City) moved out after nearly 25 years.

High Volume of Proposals

St Johns Beacon's landlords, London-based Rivington Hark (RH), launched a formal Expression of Interest (EOI) process over 18 months ago to find new operators for the Grade II listed structure. They encouraged "all ideas, however wacky." The original deadline was set for Friday, June 5, but due to the scale of interest, representatives have extended the submission period.

A spokesperson for St Johns Beacon said they were "delighted" with the response. The ECHO understands that interested parties will have a few more days, rather than weeks or months, to submit proposals.

History and Renovation

The 138-metre building was completed in 1969, with the revolving Tower Restaurant opening at the top in 1971. After Radio City's departure on Christmas Eve 2024, St Johns management company noted the need for remedial work. These renovations are now nearly complete, and multiple offers and "strong expressions of interest" have been received.

St Johns Centre Director Neil Ashcroft previously stated the firm would "take the time to ensure we secure the right use for the Beacon's long term future." The ECHO reported last year that several firms had already made offers to occupy the tower.

Future Prospects

The extended deadline aims to accommodate the high demand while ensuring the best long-term use for the iconic beacon. Landlords are reviewing a range of creative proposals, and a final decision is expected soon.
