St Andrews Hospice has confirmed the closure of one of its Scottish branches in Hamilton, following "significant issues" with its premises over the past few years. The shop will cease trading on Thursday, September 3, the charity announced on social media last Friday (August 21).
Decision 'not taken lightly'
The charitable organisation, which operates 14 boutiques across South and North Lanarkshire, said its decision was "not taken lightly" but was "essential" due to ongoing building problems. The hospice is now "actively seeking" a new location in the Hamilton area.
The statement read: "We are sorry to share that the St Andrew’s Hospice Shop in Hamilton will be closing its doors on Thursday 3rd September. This decision has not been taken lightly but is essential following a number of significant issues with the property over the last few years. We have been actively seeking new premises within Hamilton and will continue to do so."
Donations and staffing arrangements
Ahead of the closure, the organisation has confirmed it will "no longer be able to accept donations" after tomorrow (Tuesday, August 25). A clearance sale is currently running as the shop prepares to close for good next week.
The charity added: "Arrangements have been put in place with employed staff and volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution over the years so that they continue to work and volunteer with St Andrew’s Hospice."
Community reaction and other locations
Supporters in the Hamilton area have expressed their sadness on Facebook. One comment read: "Sorry to hear. Hope the council might be able to help source alternative premises. Out of town or even retail park sites might be an option?" Another wrote: "That is really sad. There is a good one in Motherwell though." A third said: "Hope you get new premises soon."
Despite the closure, St Andrews Hospice has assured customers that its commitment to supporting patients and families "remains unchanged." Supporters are encouraged to continue donating, volunteering and shopping at its other locations, including its home boutique in Airdrie and a 22,000 sq. ft outlet in Coatbridge.
All St Andrews Hospice shops sell donated goods, hospice branded products, brand new gifts and homeware, with proceeds helping to provide palliative care in the local community.
