Square + Fair has opened a brand new sandwich and coffee bar on Wellfield Road, one of Cardiff's most popular foodie streets. The bright yellow building is located just a stone's throw from Roath Recreation Ground.
The Cardiff-based company, known for its loaded focaccia sandwiches, first brought its gourmet offerings to the Royal Arcade in the city centre last June. Now it has opened its second full venue, having recently stepped back from serving sandwiches at Smash Padel in Llandaff Fields.
New Venue Details
After being the main caterer at Smash Padel, the company spent its final day at the site this week, saying they are "a high street brand at heart". The new location on Wellfield Road is a couple of doors down from SaraZtro.
In recent years, Wellfield Road has seen an influx of food and drink businesses, with A-Head Of The Game Nutrition and Sip and Salt among the most recent additions. Since June, Square + Fair has been documenting the two-storey build across its social media channels.
Founder's Vision
Speaking during the opening day on Tuesday, September 1, founder Nick Collins said: "We really wanted to bring to this street that old-fashioned feel of the independent grocers and butchers, how they were back in the day showcasing your produce in the window."
The new location will be open between 7.30am and 7.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and between 8.30am and 6.30pm on Sundays. Nick added: "Far too many coffee shops close at 6.30pm. For people who want to come and have a coffee at 5.30/6pm they don't want to feel like they're about to get kicked out."
"You'll never see that from any of our staff; they won't be putting chairs on any tables, dimming the lights, or getting the mop out at 6pm. We're open until 7.30pm and you're more than welcome to stay a little past that as well."
Menu and Community Focus
Nick also highlighted that the new spot includes three new focaccia sandwiches, including a carbonara chicken which he described as "legendary". Alongside their signature dishes, they also serve salads, giant sausage rolls, cake cans, cakes, pastries, and coffees.
The new venue's website states: "This location is all about community, chef-led food and catering to all ages. Positioned next to one of Cardiff's most loved green spaces, it brings together socialising and great food with great locally roasted coffee."
