Why I Abandoned Tesco for Marks and Spencer After a Biscuit Price Surprise

Marks and Spencer has traditionally been viewed as one of the United Kingdom's more premium and costly supermarket chains. I always strive to be financially prudent with my weekly grocery shop, but I regularly indulge in a small treat at the weekend. Biscuits, particularly Jaffa Cakes, have long been my favourite indulgence. The delightful combination of chocolate and a tangy orange centre makes them a beloved British snack.

Tesco was my habitual destination for these treats. That changed during a recent visit when I ventured into the biscuit aisle. To my astonishment, the standard price for a packet of 10 Jaffa Cakes was £1.50, while a triple pack of 33 biscuits cost £3.75. This seemed excessively high for what I considered a simple pleasure.

The situation was exacerbated by Tesco's Clubcard system. On this occasion, I had forgotten my card. With the Clubcard, the prices dropped to 75p for the 10-pack and £2.75 for the triple pack. While these appear more reasonable, they are presented as a discount from an inflated standard rate.

I have never been comfortable with the Clubcard requirement. It feels intrusive, tracking every purchase and demanding significant personal details simply to access fair pricing on everyday items like biscuits. I resent the idea of needing an extra card cluttering my wallet just to avoid feeling ripped off at the checkout. Shopping at Tesco began to leave me frustrated, spoiling what should have been an enjoyable experience.

The Search for a Better Alternative

After voicing my complaints to friends, I decided to explore other supermarkets. I initially tried discount retailers Aldi and Lidl. Their biscuits were substantially cheaper and tasted good, but their version of Jaffa Cakes didn't quite satisfy my specific craving for that perfect balance of flavours.

A friend then recommended Marks and Spencer, praising their biscuit range. Skeptical but curious, I decided to give M&S a try. Sampling their Jaffa Cakes was a revelation. I was instantly converted and wondered why I had ever shopped elsewhere for my treats.

The Marks and Spencer Jaffa Cakes are a distinctly superior product. They feature a richer dark chocolate and a more intense, vibrant orange jelly centre, creating a bolder and more satisfying flavour contrast. The sponge base is noticeably softer and more cake-like, elevating the entire eating experience from a simple biscuit to a miniature dessert.

Critically, the pricing at M&S feels more transparent and fair. A smaller pack is priced at £2.10, which contains more biscuits than Tesco's equivalent, making direct comparison nuanced. The larger pack costs £3.25, which actually undercuts Tesco's standard price for their triple pack. There are no loyalty card games or conditional discounts; the price you see is the price you pay.

A More Pleasant Shopping Experience

The overall experience at Marks and Spencer is simply more pleasant. I no longer have to fret about remembering a loyalty card or deciphering complex pricing strategies. I can shop for my treats, confident in the consistent quality and value, without any post-shop irritation. For me, the combination of a far superior product and a straightforward, honest pricing model has made M&S my new go-to for indulgent snacks, marking a permanent switch from Tesco.
