Lewis's Fish Restaurant in Seahouses, a fish and chip shop that counts singer Sam Fender among its customers and has been named one of the best in the UK by national experts, has closed 'until further notice' after a devastating fire. Staff announced the news on Thursday, vowing to 'be back soon.'
Fire broke out after closing on Tuesday
Staff announced on Facebook that they had been forced to shut due to a fire breaking out in their building on Main Street earlier this week. The post read: 'We are devastated to share the news that we had a fire on our premises after closing on Tuesday evening. Thankfully there was only a few of us left on the premises and we all got out unharmed.'
'Unfortunately the damage means we’ll be closed until further notice. We are completely gutted and still trying to process what has happened to a place that means so much to us, our team and our customers.'
Gratitude for help and promise to return
Lewis's expressed gratitude for the help received after the fire, adding: 'We would also like to make a HUGE thankyou and express our gratitude to the few individuals that helped keep the fire contained and eventually went out while we waited on the emergency services.'
The chippy's statement ended with a reassurance that they'd 'be back soon' and a promise to keep everyone updated on when they can re-open.
Celebrity fans and national recognition
Lewis's was rated as one of the best places for fish and chips in the country by The Times in both 2022 and 2023. Staff were delighted when singer Sam Fender visited for a chippy tea with his family in March, days after winning Song of the Year and Rock Act at the 2026 Brits. Other celebrity customers have included late footballer Jack Charlton, actor Kevin Whately, and athletics hero Sir Brendan Foster.
