Sainsbury's Tops Picky Bits Taste Test: Aldi to M&S Compared
Sainsbury's Tops Picky Bits Test: Aldi to M&S Compared

Sainsbury's has emerged as the clear winner in a comparison of picky bits selections from five major UK supermarkets, offering the best combination of variety, value, and dietary inclusivity. The retailer outshone Aldi, M&S, Lidl, and Asda in a taste test conducted by Shania King-Soyza.

Lidl Ranks Last with Limited Selection

Lidl placed fifth due to its small footprint and underwhelming range. Despite competitive pricing—including sausage rolls at £1.29 for nine and cheese-and-onion rolls at £1.75 for six—the store lacked distinctive or exciting options. Unique finds like barbecue pork mini rolls (£1.99) and sweetcorn and jalapeno fritters (£1.99) were noted, but the overall selection was deemed unappealing.

Aldi Offers Value but Limited Variety

Aldi secured fourth place, praised for unbeatable value. Highlights included sweet chilli houmous (95p), mini pork and pickle pies (£1.89 for six), and cocktail sausages (£1.99 for 40). However, its limited variety compared to rivals kept it from ranking higher.

Asda Impresses with Deals but Lacks Cohesion

Asda came third, thanks to mix-and-match promotions like two-for-£3.50 on mini pork pies and cocktail sausages, and a three-for-£7 deal on olives, dips, and cheeses. Standouts included pesto mozzarella pearls (£2.98) and vintage cheddar rolls (£2.50). However, its scattered picky bits section and slightly lower quality compared to M&S and Sainsbury's held it back.

M&S: King of Variety but Pricey

Marks and Spencer took second place, renowned for its extensive range of unique items. Favourites included the fully loaded Mexican-style dip (£3.25), mini feta and cheese pot (£4), and Korean-style sticky rice salad (£3). Offers such as three salads for £8 and two dips for £2.50 were available, but higher prices prevented M&S from claiming the top spot.

Sainsbury's Crowned Best for Picky Bits

Sainsbury's emerged as the undisputed champion, offering two fully stocked aisles of picky bits. The retailer excelled with a wide range catering to vegan, vegetarian, kosher, and halal diets. Nectar cardholders can buy any three Taste the Difference products for £8, including items like Pesto & Parmesan Pasta (£3.25) and King Prawns with Sunblush Tomatoes & Pesto (£4.50). Sainsbury's also matched Aldi's pricing on sausage rolls and provided reduced rates on olives, pork pies, and dips via Nectar. The combination of extensive choice, dietary inclusivity, and value made it the clear winner.
