Sainsbury's mince pie advent calendar for 2026

Sainsbury's is preparing to release a new advent calendar for 2026, but behind each door shoppers will find mince pies rather than chocolate. The calendar, revealed by UK's Newest Foods on Instagram, includes "Viennese Whirl Mince Pies, All Butter Mince Pies and Brandy, Port and Brown Butter Mince Pies."

What are mince pies and why are they a festive staple?

Mince pies are small, sweet British pastries traditionally eaten during the Christmas season. Despite the name, modern versions contain no meat. Instead, shortcrust or puff pastry is filled with 'mincemeat'—a mixture of dried fruits, warm spices, spirits such as brandy or rum, sugar, and suet.

The tradition dates back to medieval times, when Crusaders introduced cooking methods combining meat with dried fruits and spices. Early pies contained minced mutton, beef, or pork, preserved with sugar, spirits, and spices. During the Tudor period, pies were often oblong to resemble a manger and made with 13 ingredients, symbolising Jesus and the 12 Apostles. Eating one on each of the 12 Days of Christmas was thought to bring good luck. By the Victorian era, meat was removed, leaving only suet for richness.

Shoppers react to the mince pie calendar

Social media responses have been enthusiastic. One person called the calendar their "dream," saying they "had to get one" to sample the flavours. Another wrote, "It's about time," while a third joked, "I would love this as no one else likes mince pies in my house, so it would be all mine." A fourth shopper marvelled at enjoying "a mince pie a day" instead of a small chocolate.

The calendar has yet to be confirmed as a permanent product, but many followers are hoping it will become a regular festive fixture.
