Sainsbury's brings back controversial Gingerbread Doritos flavour

Sainsbury's has brought back a limited-edition festive flavour of Doritos, and crisp lovers are divided over its return. The Gingerbread tortilla chips, first launched a year ago, are back on shelves in mid-October, combining sweet and savoury notes in an unusual twist for crisps.

Reintroduction of the festive snack

The supermarket appears to be embracing the festive spirit early, with the limited-edition snack available again. Sharing a photo of the product on Instagram, New Foods UK wrote: "Gingerbread Doritos are back at Sainsbury's."

Sainsbury's website lists 180g sharing bags of the Gingerbread Doritos at £2.50. A product description reads: "Enjoy the full-on crunch with intense gingerbread flavour."

Shoppers react to the return

Reactions from shoppers have been mixed. One person joked: "Not these again. I just manage to get rid of them at the summer village tombola." Another asked: "Why are they bringing these back? Literally no one wants these back."

A third shopper declared: "I'm not making that mistake again." A fourth added: "They did them last year too and I didn’t know anyone who liked them." Others, however, were intrigued and tagged Facebook friends to encourage them to try the flavour.

PepsiCo's festive range

When the flavour was first introduced last year, Rob Pothier, marketing director at parent company PepsiCo, said: "Christmas is a time of togetherness and joy - and our festive snack range is designed to reflect just that."

He continued: "We’re excited to unveil a strong seasonal offering that not only taps into consumer demand for special flavours and formats but also supports retailers in maximising sales during the festive period."

He added: "With bold new flavours like Doritos Gingerbread, Walkers Emmental Cheese and Walkers Beef Wellington - which we expect to stir up conversations and intrigue with an unexpected seasonal twist - and festive pack designs, we’re helping consumers make every moment of the season a little more joyful." Walkers Emmental Cheese and Walkers Beef Wellington have already been spotted in Tesco this year.

Doritos added on its Sainsbury's listing: "At Doritos, we believe no one should settle for boring crisps and snacks. When it comes to bold snacking experiences, we're where it's at." The statement continued: "With intense flavours, a full-on crunch, and a range of sizes for every occasion, Doritos snacks are made for enjoying on the go or sharing with mates. Unleash bold crunch, bold flavours with Doritos. For the Bold in Everyone."
