Russell & Bromley Shuts 10 Stores as Next Takes Over, 90% Off Sale
Russell & Bromley Closes 10 Stores with 90% Off Sale

British shoe chain Russell & Bromley has closed 10 of its stores following its acquisition by Next, sparking a rush of shoppers eager to take advantage of clearance sales offering up to 90% off. The iconic retailer, which previously operated 36 high street outlets nationwide, entered administration earlier this year, leading to a pre-pack deal with Next.

Store Closures and Clearance Sales

This week, branches in Covent Garden, Bath, and Harrogate shut their doors, with clearance events slashing prices by 90% on all items. Customers have taken to social media to share their bargains, including a pair of boots originally priced at £900, now available for just £128. TikTok user @ninalisaaa documented her visit, showing the remaining deals as shelves empty for the final time.

Another shopper, @lauracathryn, expressed excitement about visiting the Ashford location after hearing the news, noting discounts on both current and previous season collections. She said: 'I could not get over the prices. They had shoes for £30 from over £300 - that is a 90% reduction. The amount of stock they have is crazy - I was in shoe heaven.'

Shopper Reactions

Reactions online have been mixed. One user commented: 'I'm devastated they are closing. My favourite store for work shoes. They last ages!' Another wrote: 'I'm sorry, 90%?!?!' A third shared: 'I've just ordered online - we will see.'

List of Closed Russell & Bromley Stores

The closures follow Next's acquisition of the footwear brand through a pre-pack administration deal struck in January this year. The deal saw Next secure the Russell & Bromley name, additional intellectual property, and three designated stores in Chelsea, Mayfair, and Bluewater. It also brought 40 staff members into Next's business.

Russell & Bromley previously operated 36 stores with approximately 440 employees, but now faces the planned closure of 33 standalone stores and nine concessions across the UK and Ireland, according to Drapers.

History of the Brand

The brand was founded in 1880 by George Bromley and Elizabeth Russell in Eastbourne, building its reputation on iconic loafers, boots, pumps, and brogues. It garnered a devoted following among high-profile names, including Kate Middleton, Katie Holmes, and Billie Piper.

The Daily Express has reached out to Russell & Bromley's joint administrators Interpath for a response.
