Amazon has launched its Prime Day sale on June 23, 2026, with a notable discount on the base model Kindle, now priced at £79.99—a £15 reduction from the usual £94.99. The sale runs until June 26 and is exclusive to Prime subscribers.
Base Kindle Nearly Matches Paperwhite Specs
According to Henry Burrell, Deputy Technology Editor, the entry-level Kindle has never been closer in specifications to the Kindle Paperwhite, which typically retails for £159.99 (currently on sale for £119.99). Burrell tested every current Kindle model—Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Colorsoft, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft—and concluded that while the Paperwhite is the design and function sweet spot, the base Kindle is the e-reader most people need. The only missing feature is waterproofing.
The Kindle is the lightest and most compact model, featuring a matte plastic frame and a 6-inch glare-free display. It is easier to hold in one hand for long reading sessions compared to heavier, pricier alternatives. The device offers a 300 pixels per inch monochrome E Ink display, faster page turns than previous generations, and a front light that is 25% brighter at maximum setting. Dark mode inverts colours for reduced eye strain.
Storage and Battery Life
The Kindle includes 16GB of storage, sufficient for thousands of books, and a USB-C battery that lasts up to six weeks on a single charge. However, constant use with the front light and Wi-Fi connectivity shortens this to roughly two weeks. Burrell notes that the device is designed to be distraction-free, unlike smartphones or social media.
Ads and Alternatives
The £79.99 model displays lock-screen ads. Shoppers can purchase an ad-free version for £88.99 (down from £104.99). For those avoiding Amazon, alternatives like the Kobo Clara BW (£149.99) are available at Currys and Argos but currently lack discounts, making the Kindle the best value option.
Amazon offers a free 30-day Prime trial for newcomers to access these deals.
