Discount retailer Poundstretcher has closed its megastore in Newtown, Powys, Wales, marking another blow for the UK high street. The 15,000 square foot shop shut its doors for the final time on Saturday, July 4, after the landlord served notice.
Store Closure Details
A sign posted on the store's door prior to closure read: "Dear customers, unfortunately, this Poundstretcher site will be closing Saturday, July 4th, due to our landlord serving notice. We apologise and would like to take opportunity to thank all our customers for your custom and support, it has been an absolute pleasure and all the best in the future."
The closure is part of a wider restructuring effort by the chain, which operates nearly 300 stores and employs around 3,000 people across the UK. Poundstretcher was acquired by US investment firm Fortress in 2024.
Financial Struggles and Restructuring
In March, Poundstretcher announced it would seek rent reductions from landlords as part of its turnaround plans, insisting it was not planning widespread store closures or job cuts. However, court hearings in May and June revealed the retailer faced a £2.8 million funding shortfall. Lawyers reportedly warned that the company would have "insufficient funds" to meet a payment due in the week beginning June 28.
On June 16, Wales Online reported that Poundstretcher managed to avoid going into administration just weeks after worrying it "might have no choice."
Broader High Street Context
The closure comes amid a wave of administration woes hitting other iconic businesses such as Claire's and The Original Factory Shop. Despite these challenges, Poundstretcher remains one of the UK's best-known discount retailers, offering a broad range of products including household essentials, food, pet supplies, toys, and homeware.
