Storing potatoes alongside apples can keep them fresh up to three times longer and slow sprouting, according to waste management experts the Wheeldon Brothers. The advice comes as households look for simple ways to cut food waste and extend the shelf life of everyday staples.
How apples help potatoes last longer
Apples produce ethylene gas, which slows the ripening process in potatoes and can prevent them from turning bad. The Wheeldon Brothers said: "It's an easy way to reduce waste and make your groceries last."
They added: "Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes."
Fridge storage is now considered safe
The experts also confirmed that refrigerating potatoes is safe and can keep them fresh up to three times longer. Earlier concerns about acrylamide formation have been debunked, with modern research showing fridge storage is safe.
However, potatoes belong to the nightshade family, and eating them when they are going off can be harmful. The Wheeldon Brothers warned: "Sprouted or green potatoes should not be eaten."
To keep potatoes in top condition, store them properly and check them often for signs of spoilage.
