Family-run fish and chip shop chain opens in UK seaside town – in business 60 years
Papa's Fish & Chips opens in Ramsgate after 60 years in business

Papa’s Fish & Chips, a family-run business with 60 years of history, has opened its latest restaurant at the Royal Pavilion on Ramsgate Harbour Parade. The new seaside venue brings a familiar name to the Kent coast, offering traditional fish and chips alongside a wider menu of freshly prepared dishes.

A family legacy since 1966

Founded in 1966, the business has built its reputation around traditional fish and chips, crispy batter and freshly cooked food. The new Ramsgate restaurant is expected to create local employment opportunities and become part of the town’s hospitality and tourism scene.

The opening on August 18 was marked by a special family moment, as one of the original brothers who opened the first Papa’s restaurant in Kent in 1966 attended the ceremony to cut the ribbon. The occasion marked 60 years of Papa’s family history in the county.

Menu and community impact

The new restaurant offers a full menu of freshly cooked fish and chips, as well as children’s meals and vegetarian and gluten-free options. Customers can also use the takeaway service, making it possible to enjoy a meal while exploring Ramsgate or taking in the seaside.

Daniel Maund, director of operations at Papa’s Fish & Chips, said the company was excited to join the seaside community, Kent Live reported.

“We’re incredibly excited to be bringing Papa’s Fish & Chips to Ramsgate and becoming part of such a fantastic seaside community,” he said. “Ramsgate has a rich maritime heritage and a strong connection with visitors and tourism, making it a fantastic location for our latest restaurant.”

Maund said the business was looking forward to welcoming both local people and tourists. “We’re looking forward to welcoming local residents as well as visitors to the town and creating a place where families and friends can enjoy great fish and chips in a relaxed seaside setting,” he said. He added that the company was passionate about supporting the local community and contributing to the area’s hospitality and tourism economy.

Sustainability commitment

Sustainability is also a key part of Papa’s approach. The restaurant says it only serves sustainably sourced fish and is committed to protecting fish stocks for future generations. The company states that all of its haddock and cod is Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) accredited, with the business encouraging customers to choose sustainably sourced fish as part of efforts to preserve the oceans.

With its new Ramsgate opening, Papa’s is continuing a family story that began in Kent six decades ago – while aiming to establish itself as a new destination for traditional fish and chips on the town’s harbour front.
