Ohio's First Buc-ee's Opens to Massive Crowds as Chain Expands Nationwide
Ohio's First Buc-ee's Opens to Massive Crowds

Excitement reached fever pitch in Huber Heights, Ohio, earlier this week as the state's first-ever Buc-ee's travel center opened its doors to thousands of eager shoppers. Residents had been anticipating this moment for months, with many arriving hours before the Monday morning grand opening to secure their spot in line.

Camping Out for a Gas Station Experience

In a remarkable display of brand loyalty, dedicated fans huddled in blankets and perched on folding chairs outside the massive facility, braving the elements for hours before the official opening. Channel 6 captured the spectacle on camera, showing queues that stretched completely around the enormous building, illustrating the extraordinary draw of this Texas-born retail phenomenon.

The Buc-ee's Phenomenon

Buc-ee's has developed a cult following, particularly among younger generations, thanks to its social media-friendly snacks and over-the-top scale. The chain is renowned for transforming ordinary pit stops into destination experiences, with locations sprawling across up to 75,000 square feet of land. The beloved Texas-born mega gas station chain boasts facilities that dwarf conventional service stations, offering an almost overwhelming selection of snacks, souvenirs, and Texas-themed merchandise.

Inside these football-field-sized travel centers, shoppers discover freshly made barbecue sandwiches, mountains of the chain's famous Beaver Nuggets (caramelized corn puffs), house-brand jerky cut and packaged on site, and aisles of branded apparel featuring Buc-ee's grinning beaver mascot. Employees in distinctive bright red shirts hustle between checkout counters that often outnumber those found in supermarkets, ensuring efficient service even during peak holiday travel periods.

Aggressive Expansion Plans

The Ohio opening represents just one piece of Buc-ee's ambitious nationwide expansion strategy. The company has been aggressively rolling out plans to plant its supersized travel centers across additional states throughout 2026 and beyond. Lucky states set to receive new locations include Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, and Kentucky, with Florida, Tennessee, and Arkansas expected to see the most new Buc-ee's outlets as the chain pushes deeper into the Southwest and Midwest regions.

By the end of 2026, what some call the 'Disneyland of gas stations' plans to open four more iconic outposts, with another fifteen locations scheduled in subsequent years. Each new facility promises more than one hundred gas pumps, stores packed with brisket and beaver nuggets, and the famously clean bathrooms that have become a Buc-ee's trademark.

Not Everyone Is Celebrating

While Ohio residents welcomed their new Buc-ee's with open arms, not all communities share this enthusiasm. In March, it was revealed that Stafford, Virginia residents were up in arms about plans to install a 120-pump, 74,000-square-foot gas station in their backyard. A Change.org petition has gathered more than 2,500 signatures, with many supporters packing a recent public meeting to passionately voice their opposition to the development.

The announcement of a new Buc-ee's location in Fort Pierce, Florida, made headlines in January after early plans suggested the gas station would span 76,000 square feet—approximately half the size of a Walmart Supercenter and even larger than the company's current record-holder in Luling, Texas, which measures about 75,000 square feet with 120 fuel pumps.

From Humble Beginnings to National Presence

The first Buc-ee's opened in Texas in 1982, and the company now operates 54 locations across 11 states, maintaining 24-hour operations 365 days a year. What began as a simple convenience store has evolved into a retail experience that transcends traditional gas station expectations, combining massive scale with carefully curated products and services that keep customers returning again and again.

Fan favorites driving this loyalty include the Sausage on a Stick, Dr Pepper Icees, and an entire wall dedicated to various jerky selections. More than just a place to refuel vehicles, Buc-ee's has successfully created destinations where the journey becomes as memorable as the destination itself.
