A British mum recently bought fish and chips for a family of four, but the price left many people floored—not because it was expensive, but because it was surprisingly affordable. Becky, known as Becky's Bakes UK on TikTok, shared her dining experience in a candid video that has since garnered hundreds of likes and dozens of comments.
What did the meal include?
In the clip, Becky revealed the total cost of the meal was £26.50. The order consisted of one sausage in batter, a large portion of chips, one small cod, a quarter pounder with cheese, and a pot of curry sauce. Becky said: "Before I show you what we ordered, guess how much this cost? It was feeding a family of four. £26.50 for fish and chips. I actually didn't think that was too bad. Convince me otherwise." She added: "Considering what some takeaways charge these days, I actually walked away thinking that wasn't too bad."
Public reaction
Hundreds of people liked the video, and dozens commented to share their thoughts. One said: "That lot is a bargain." Another added: "I got fish and chips on Friday. Two cod, two large chips, two soft drinks - £32.75." A third replied: "Good deal considering the prices these days." Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "That's really cheap." One more noted: "That’s a decent large bag! In Derry, a large bag is ridiculous. It wouldn’t feed three people these days."
Rising cost of fish and chips
Generally, the cost of fish and chips has been rising. According to reports, prices have nearly doubled since 2020. The average price for cod and chips is now about £11.41, while haddock and chips cost an average of £10.29. Prices differ depending on location, and the increase has occurred for several reasons: there is less cod in the sea due to catch limits to protect fish, energy costs for running deep fryers have spiked, and the cost of cooking oil and potatoes has also risen.
