M&S Magical Christmas Theatre chocolate box plays music and lights up
M&S Christmas chocolate box lights up and plays Deck the Halls

Marks and Spencer has expanded its festive confectionery range with a £15 showstopper: the Magical Christmas Theatre box, which lights up and plays a rendition of Deck the Halls every time the lid is opened.

The high-street retailer is targeting shoppers looking for an upgrade rather than competing in the annual battle of Christmas tubs, where Cadbury Heroes and Mars' Celebrations consistently dominate YouGov purchase rankings, while Quality Street, Roses, and discount rivals like Aldi fight for basket space. Every December, roughly half of all UK households stock up on sweet treats to share.

A Multisensory Festive Decoration

The 'stage' box illuminates an intricate winter village scene and doubles as a keepsake decoration for the festive table. Inside, the 245g box contains dark, blond, milk and white chocolate gnomes, Santas and gingerbread men.

M&S shoppers can find the musical theatre box in stores now and can check availability at nearby stores online by entering their postcode.

Chocolate Flavours and Ingredients

The assortment features rich milk, intense dark, and velvety white chocolates with assorted flavoured centres. The white chocolate Gonk is made with Belgian white chocolate and a creamy Madagascan vanilla truffle filling, while a Belgian milk chocolate version offers a rich milk chocolate truffle.

The gingerbread shapes include a pure Belgian dark chocolate flavour with a smooth dark chocolate ganache, and a golden blond gingerbread man filled with a rich blond chocolate ganache. According to M&S, the chocolates are suitable for vegetarians but are not suitable for people with nut or peanut allergies.

Shopper Reactions

Showing off the product on Instagram, M&S associate Oli Cullum Hollins sparked debate among customers in the comments. One said: "Brought this before it sells out." Another commented that the box was "so beautiful."

However, some customers were unhappy with the upmarket item. A few Instagram users pointed out that it was "disappointing to see palm oil" listed in the ingredients. A second user agreed: "Seriously, look at the ingredients...stop using sunflower, palm, and rapeseed oils as fillers in your foods. Cheap ingredients, not good M&S."

M&S mandates that 100% of the palm oil in its own-brand products is RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certified. Furthermore, nearly 99% of their food-based palm oil is strictly segregated and traceable to ensure it does not contribute to deforestation.
