Background of the Closures
The closures stem from Morrison's £190 million rescue deal for McColl's in 2022, which has operated at a loss since. Many of the 100 stores slated for closure were part of the McColl's acquisition. A spokesperson for Morrisons confirmed that the convenience store closures are based on a continuous review of performance, identifying stores that have been loss-making for years despite remedial action.

Affected employees will be redeployed if possible, according to Retail Gazette. Despite the closures, Morrison's plans to open 300 new stores across the country. Additionally, convenience and franchise director Paul Dobson is leaving the business after 15 years.
