Morrisons to Open 300 Stores Amid Closure of 100 Daily Sites Under New Boss
Morrisons Plans 300 New Stores, Closes 100 Daily Sites

Morrisons has unveiled plans to open 300 stores across the UK under a newly appointed managing director for convenience and wholesale, Maz Ahmed, while simultaneously closing 100 of its Daily stores. The first closure took place this weekend, with more expected to follow as the supermarket chain pivots toward a franchise-focused expansion strategy.

New Leadership for Convenience Operations

Maz Ahmed, the new managing director for convenience and wholesale, will oversee the rollout of 300 new stores. His appointment comes as Morrisons seeks to improve performance at its remaining Daily outlets. CEO Rami Baitiéh commented: "Maz has demonstrated strong leadership skills in his previous roles and is already bringing new focus and drive to the management of our convenience operations. I look forward to his further contribution to the development of this important business."

Closures Linked to McColl's Acquisition

The 100 closures primarily affect Morrisons Daily stores that were acquired as part of the 2022 buyout of McColl's. According to The Grocer, these sites underperformed and are being phased out to streamline the chain's convenience portfolio. The closures were first announced in May 2026, and the weekend's shutdown marked the beginning of this process.

Franchise Expansion Strategy

The long-term plan involves opening 300 franchise stores, shifting away from company-owned Daily outlets. Victoria Lockie, head of wholesale, strategic projects and acquisitions, explained: "It's about quality, not quantity. A key part of our strategy is ensuring we are targeting the right retailers to join the Morrisons Daily family. We pride ourselves on the compelling own brand range we offer franchises, driving quality and value to their customers, particularly in fresh categories like food-to-go. Our recruitment strategy needs to ensure potential sites have the right store space to showcase our offer to its full potential and are in the right location to drive an outstanding, consistent proposition."

Timeline and Impact

Lockie confirmed the changes will be implemented over the coming months. The net effect will see Morrisons reduce its directly operated convenience footprint while expanding its franchise network, aiming for a more sustainable and profitable convenience business model.
