Morrisons has completed a near £2 million upgrade to its supermarket on Treloggan Road in Newquay, Cornwall, the largest grocery store in the seaside town. The refurbishment was officially unveiled on Monday, June 22, by Mayor Cllr Drew Creek, and is designed to make shopping easier for customers, particularly when navigating the chilled food range.
New refrigeration improves freshness and navigation
The centrepiece of the upgrade is a full replacement of the store's fridge units. The new refrigerators are designed to keep food fresher for longer, while also improving product visibility and display quality. A Morrisons spokesperson said: "The full refrigeration refit is perfectly timed with the warmer weather, to bring a range of benefits as customers will experience easier navigation of chilled and fresh food, alongside improved product visibility and display quality, making shopping at Morrisons Newquay even easier for local shoppers."
Katie Bonner, store manager of Morrisons Newquay, told Voice Newspapers: "We're excited to have been selected to benefit from upgraded refrigerators. It's been brilliant to celebrate with our community, alongside Mayor Drew Creek and some of our valued local suppliers. The new fridges provide a brighter, easier shopping experience and help ensure products stay fresher for longer, meaning they are a great investment for both our local store and our customers."
Energy efficiency and net-zero goals
The new fridges are also built with lower energy consumption in mind, aligning with Morrisons' commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This investment supports the supermarket's broader sustainability strategy while enhancing the customer experience.
Morrisons Daily closures and new openings
The upgrade comes as Morrisons continues to adjust its convenience store network. The company has recently announced the closure of dozens of Morrisons Daily branches, which were originally acquired as part of a £190 million rescue deal for McColl's in 2022. However, the supermarket recently opened a new Morrisons Daily on King Street in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. Morrisons operates 1,600 Morrisons Daily convenience stores, of which around 600 are franchise stores where individuals or businesses sell goods under the Morrisons brand via a licence.
