Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Belgian full-back Thomas Meunier on a free transfer, with the 34-year-old revealing that the club's qualification for European football was a major influence on his decision.
Meunier joins Sunderland on two-year deal
The right-back, who represented Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, has signed a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light. Meunier arrives after his contract with Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille expired, bringing with him vast experience from spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund.
With over 550 senior club appearances and 83 international caps, Meunier is expected to bolster Sunderland's defensive options as they prepare for both domestic and European competition.
European football a deciding factor
Sunderland secured a seventh-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League, earning a spot in the Europa League. Meunier admitted this played a crucial role in his decision to join the Black Cats.
“Competing in Europe was also a big factor in my decision because, as a player, you always want to test yourself against the best teams and compete for trophies,” Meunier said.
Excitement for Premier League challenge
Meunier expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating his eagerness to experience the Premier League. “The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, and it's a challenge I've wanted to experience,” he said.
He also highlighted the club's ambition as a key factor: “When I spoke with the club, I was impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to keep moving forward.”
Veteran presence for Sunderland
Meunier, who will wear the No. 12 shirt, aims to bring his experience to the squad both on and off the pitch. “I hope I can bring my experience to the squad, both on and off the pitch,” he said. “I've been fortunate to play in some fantastic teams throughout my career, and now I'm looking forward to giving everything for this club, helping my team-mates and building a strong connection with the supporters.”
He is set to join the Sunderland squad in early August and is looking forward to playing his first match in front of the fans. “I can't wait to get started, meet everyone and play my first match in front of the fans,” he added.
