McDonald's Unveils New Under $3 Value Menu Nationwide
McDonald's rolled out a new value menu across the United States on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, marking a significant shift in the fast-food giant's pricing strategy. The menu features a selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items all priced under $3, which the company claims offers customers greater flexibility and choice in their ordering habits.
End of a Popular Deal Program Sparks Customer Disappointment
However, the launch comes with a notable downside: McDonald's has discontinued its buy-one, add-one-for-$1 deal program. This previous promotion allowed customers to add a second item for just $1 when purchasing a full-priced item of equal or lesser value. The elimination of this deal means that whether the new menu actually provides savings depends heavily on individual ordering patterns and geographic location.
Experts highlight that the value of the new menu can vary significantly by market, even within the same region. According to data from Technomic, a firm that tracks menu pricing, some items included in the under-$3 deals were already being sold at similar price points in local markets during the fourth quarter of 2025.
Marketing Strategy and Customer Response
Heather Nelson, senior director of syndicated research at Technomic, commented on the change, stating, "McDonald's is always experimenting with the architecture of their value offerings. As a marketing tactic, this is designed to draw more attention to the value they were providing." This suggests the new menu may be more about rebranding existing deals rather than introducing substantial new savings.
A McDonald's spokesperson addressed the update earlier this month, explaining, "The Under $3 Menu delivers on what customers have told us matters most: consistently great prices on their favorite items and the freedom to order what they want, when they want – no bundling required. Alongside other everyday value offerings like Meal Deals, customers now have more options to choose from – whether they're looking for a quick snack or a complete meal."
Retention of $5 Meal Deal with Price Adjustments
The new McValue menu retains the $5 Meal Deal, which was originally introduced in 2024 in response to inflation-driven price hikes that garnered widespread media attention. However, reports indicate that the McDouble version of this deal now costs $6 at many locations. This increase is attributed to higher operating costs in different markets, reflecting the economic pressures facing the fast-food industry.
Customers are advised to check local pricing, as variations may affect the perceived value of these promotions. The Independent has reached out to McDonald's for further comment on the changes and their impact on consumer savings.
