Aldi's Smithdown Road branch in Liverpool is set to reopen on Thursday, July 30 at 8am, following a two-month closure that began on May 17. The store was closed for a comprehensive refresh, part of a wider £300 million investment programme by Aldi to upgrade and expand existing UK stores in 2026.
Closure and Refurbishment Details
The Smithdown Road store initially closed on Sunday, May 17 at 4pm. Aldi apologised for the inconvenience at the time, stating the store was being "freshened up." This closure followed an earlier two-week shutdown in February. The renovations are part of a programme affecting 11 locations across the UK, including other Merseyside stores such as the Bebington Road branch.
Planned Improvements and Sustainable Features
While exact changes for the Smithdown Road store have not been specified, Aldi has indicated that upgrades will vary by location. Expected improvements include more shopping space, energy-efficient technology like fridge doors to reduce energy use, natural refrigerants to cut carbon emissions, updated fixtures and signage, and redesigned store layouts.
Investment and Expansion Context
This refurbishment comes alongside Aldi's separate £370 million commitment to open 40 new stores in 2026. Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: "As well as opening new stores, we’re also investing in existing ones to make sure everyone can get what they need from Aldi. By extending some stores, and by upgrading and improving others across the country, we can serve even more customers while creating even better shopping environments for our colleagues and shoppers. Together with our new stores, that will mean more people can access Aldi’s high-quality products at unbeatable prices."
Other Stores in the Programme
Other stores set to receive extensions this year include Beck Road in Huddersfield, Glamorgan Vale RP in Llantrisant, Bebington Road in Bebington, Springbank Road in Stirling, and Brooks Road in Lewes, among others.
