Lidl's Tower Gate milk chocolate digestives, priced at 99p for a 300g pack, came out on top in a taste test comparing them with McVitie's and Aldi versions. The winner was chosen based on flavour and texture.
Three contenders, one winner
The comparison included McVitie's Chocolate Digestives at £1.85 for 266g, Aldi Belmont Milk Chocolate Digestives at £1.09 for 300g, and Lidl Tower Gate Milk Chocolate Digestives at 99p for 300g. Each biscuit was assessed on both flavour and texture.
Aldi's version came third in the test. The biscuit was described as too buttery rather than oaty, and felt a bit sickly to eat. While it was considered a decent buy for the price, it did not make a huge impression.
McVitie's ranked second
McVitie's, widely regarded as the most well-known name in chocolate digestives, placed second. Its biscuits were praised for their rich chocolate and crumply texture, with the trademark taste coming through immediately. However, the £1.85 price tag was noted as quite high for a pack smaller than the other two.
Lidl's winning formula
Lidl's version took the top spot for three reasons. The biscuits are considerably thicker than the others, offering a more substantial bite, while still having enough chocolate to balance the biscuit. The oaty texture gives it a firmness that makes it better for dunking in tea. At 300g, the pack was also the cheapest at 99p.
