A devoted Lidl shopper has switched to buying baked goods at Marks & Spencer after discovering that Lidl's cookies went stale quickly, while M&S cookies stayed fresh for days.
From Lidl Loyalist to M&S Convert
Katherine McPhillips used to shop exclusively at Lidl to save money, praising its bakery for offering sweet treats for under £1. However, a disappointing experience with cookies led her to reconsider.
During a summer picnic, she bought a batch of Lidl cookies for 55p each. The cookies lost their freshness quickly and became too tough to bite, forcing her to throw them away. She lost only £2.75, but the incident highlighted a broader issue: none of the bakery goods she bought from Lidl lasted very long.
The M&S Discovery
After a friend shared a video about M&S's new cookie flavour, McPhillips decided to try them despite M&S's reputation for being expensive. She bought a pack of five cookies for £3.10, just 35p more than her Lidl purchase.
The M&S cookies were rich, buttery, and massive—one was about the size of her hand. More importantly, a leftover cookie remained edible after five days in her cupboard.
Value Beyond Price
McPhillips concluded that the M&S cookies offered better value due to their longer freshness, despite the slightly higher cost. She now buys all her baked goods at M&S, prioritising quality and longevity over upfront savings.
