Las Iguanas, a popular casual dining chain, has announced the closure of its Glasgow city centre restaurant on West Nile Street after 12 years of operation. The branch, which opened in 2014, will permanently shut its doors on August 2, leaving only one Las Iguanas location in Scotland at The Centre in Livingston.
Closure Announcement and Customer Reactions
The restaurant shared the news on Facebook, stating, 'It is with a heavy heart that we share some sad news. After many wonderful years of serving the people of Glasgow, Las Iguanas Glasgow will be closing its doors on the 2nd of August.' The post quickly garnered responses from disheartened customers, with one commenting, 'Absolutely gutted. My husband and I love a boozy brunch here. Sad news.' Another fan wrote, 'Gutted. One of the places that caters for so many dietary requirements, with such friendly staff.'
Restaurant's History and Reputation
Founded in 1991, Las Iguanas specialises in Latin American cuisine inspired by Mexico, Brazil, and beyond, offering bottomless brunch, tapas, and cocktails. The Glasgow branch held a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor based on over 2,000 reviews, with high scores for customer service, food, atmosphere, and value. Bosses thanked visitors for sharing special moments at the restaurant and acknowledged past and present staff for making it 'more than a restaurant.'
Context of the Closure
This closure follows Las Iguanas' recent rescue from administration. Parent firm Big Table Group secured court approval for restructuring plans that saved all 44 outlets across the UK. The Glasgow branch's shutdown leaves only the Livingston venue operating in Scotland. In similar news, one of Scotland's three remaining Wimpy restaurants, located in Dingwall High Street, has been put up for sale at £159,000, attracting both local and tourist customers.
