The Two Minute Gardener, who has avoided pesticides for over two decades, recommends this approach. He noted that although vinegar is a popular chemical-free option, boiling water works brilliantly, especially on paved areas rather than lawns.
Why Boiling Water Works on Roots
Boiling water is ideal for weeds growing between paving stones, on gravel, or amongst brickwork. The gardening expert explained: "The great thing about the boiling water is that it will actually kill the roots of the weeds. The problem with insecticides is that they kill the top of the weed, but they may not always kill the roots."
How to Apply Boiling Water
All you need is a kettle and protective gloves. Fill the kettle to the maximum and bring it to a boil, then pour the water directly onto the weeds, directing it into cracks to reach the roots. Wear gloves and proper footwear to protect against burns.
Leave the boiling water on the weeds for a full 24 hours. By the next day, the weeds should be withered and dead.
