IKEA Croydon to Host UK's First Decathlon Store in Groundbreaking Retail Partnership

IKEA has confirmed the launch date for a pioneering retail collaboration that will see a Decathlon store open within its Croydon location this April, marking a UK first for the furniture giant. The new Decathlon unit will operate as a standalone shop with its own dedicated customer entrance, transforming IKEA Croydon into a comprehensive one-stop shopping destination for lifestyle needs.

Opening Details and Celebratory Events

The Decathlon store is scheduled to welcome customers at 11am on Friday, April 24, 2026. It will occupy 1,188 square metres of retail space within the expansive 25,000 square metre IKEA store, positioned alongside IKEA's home furnishings collection. To celebrate the launch, the first 100 customers entering on April 24 will receive a signature Quechua NH100 10L backpack and a £20 gift voucher.

The festivities will continue into Saturday, April 25, with the first 100 shoppers also receiving a complimentary Quechua bag. Visitors need only present their free Decathlon Membership account upon arrival to secure these rewards, with registration available on the day or online.

On April 25, the shop front will be transformed into a mini sporting playground suitable for the entire family, featuring a climbing wall, complimentary face painting, and live DJs. Shoppers can test their abilities in various sporting challenges for big prizes and instant rewards through a Spin to Win wheel operating throughout the day, with Decathlon gear available to win. After Saturday's celebrations, the shop will continue trading throughout Sunday, allowing visitors to browse the revamped premises at their own pace.

Strategic Partnership and Consumer Insights

IKEA announced that this fresh collaboration aims to address evolving consumer demands, enabling customers to plan and furnish their homes at IKEA while uncovering new sporting interests. Based on IKEA's most recent Life at Home Report 2025, over a third (36%) of Britons cite pursuing hobbies and personal interests as their primary source of domestic satisfaction.

The furniture giant explained that welcoming Decathlon addresses this demand by offering a carefully chosen range of over 5,000 items spanning active pursuits including hiking, camping, running, fitness, swimming, and cycling. Decathlon's Buy Back scheme will also launch from the opening day, enabling shoppers to exchange pre-owned equipment for vouchers to extend the lifespan of quality kit, alongside a Click & Collect facility for straightforward access to Decathlon's complete product range.

Executive Commentary and Expansion Strategy

Kim Chin-Sung, market manager for IKEA Croydon, commented: We first opened IKEA Croydon back in 1992 and since then, the way people shop has changed. At IKEA, we believe that our physical stores have a vital role to play, as a shopping destination and to inspire customers. The new Decathlon unit coming to IKEA Croydon is the latest example of us investing in and reimagining our stores to ensure customers and co-workers continue to get the most out of these spaces.

This initiative aligns with IKEA's long-term UK expansion strategy to position the brand closer to where shoppers live, work, and spend leisure time. Last year, IKEA launched seven new UK outlets, including two city-centre locations on London's Oxford Street and in Brighton, two Plan and Order Points in Hull and York, plus three small-format stores in retail parks situated in Harlow, Norwich, and Chester.

Monica Cedres, London city director for Decathlon UK, stated: We've been looking forward to this day, and after a true team effort, we can't wait to finally jump into action alongside our neighbours at IKEA. This partnership is all about making an active lifestyle as easy as a trip to IKEA. Croydon is a borough full of energy, and whether you're looking for technical help with a PB or just grabbing your home and sport essentials in one go, we're ready to help South London discover the joy of being active together.
