Home Bargains opened the doors to its new mega-store at Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead on Saturday, August 1, welcoming shoppers from 8:30am with discounts available until 5:30pm.
The new store spans 29,000 square feet and includes a GardenWorld and a cafe. It is a departure from the smaller Home Bargains stores previously found on Gateshead's high street.
Known for cheap branded goods
The chain is known for offering a wide selection of cheap branded items, including homeware, toiletries, toys, and snacks.
When news of its opening was announced on social media, many welcomed the store to the town. Mark Robertson said on Facebook: "I honestly thought that retail world would turn out to be a white elephant. But I now believe its another great asset to Gateshead."
Charlotte Elder added: "Team Valley is getting a Home Bargains, our mooching has just levelled up!"
Janet Allan agreed: "Looking forward to it opening."
Replacing the former Homebase
The mega-store replaces an old Homebase, which collapsed into administration in November 2025, with locals happy to see the unit, which has sat empty since last year, put to good use. It's been described as "another boost for local shopping".
Expansion plans
At the start of 2026, Home Bargains vowed to open 18 new UK stores and said there would be even more to come. It added that it hopes to expand its store network to between 800 and 1,000.
