Greggs is set to open a new store in the centre of Ashton-in-Makerfield. The baking giant has submitted plans for the former William Hills betting shop premises on Gerard Street.
Greggs wish to install a new shopfront and get consent for logo displays and new signs for the town centre shop. The site lies within the Ashton-in-Makerfield conservation area, where there is a statutory duty to preserve or enhance the character and appearance of the area.
Heritage considerations
A heritage report in support of the plans said: “The application site comprises a ground-floor commercial unit within the Gerard Centre, forming part of this established town centre environment.
“While the building itself is not listed, the site lies within the conservation area and is situated amongst a number of buildings which contribute positively to the character and appearance of the wider town centre.
“As such, careful consideration has been given to the design of the proposals and their impact upon the significance of the conservation area.
“The proposed alterations are considered to enhance the appearance of the existing frontage by providing a clear and well-presented commercial identity whilst maintaining respect for the wider character of the area.”
Planned opening hours
The report said the bakery would operate between 6.30am and 7pm Mondays to Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.
The application said the proposal would ‘ensure that there is continued vitality and viability of the site’, as well as providing additional employment opportunities in the area.
Planners at Wigan council will decide on the plans in the coming weeks.
