Grants old fashioned sweet shop to open at Newcastle Quays

Grants Olde Fashioned Sweet Shop is set to open at Newcastle Quays in North Shields in early 2027, according to plans revealed on social media.

The shop will occupy a vacant unit at the Royal Quays site, the same location that drew large queues at the end of August for the launch of Mimi's Ice Cream Factory, following its success in Gosforth.

Plans announced on Facebook

The plans were first revealed earlier this month with the launch of a Facebook page and a first post that read: "Hoping to open early 2027 in North Shields! We will be a lovely family run local business taking you back to years of old with our beautiful sweet shop."

Grants also asked followers what their favourite retro sweets were. Responses included black bullets, pint pots, chocolate limes, shrimps, candy sticks and pear drops, with assurances from Grants that they will be stocking plenty of them.

Retro sweet demand in the North East

The announcement has generated considerable excitement on social media. Classic sweets such as white mice, rhubarb & custards, cinder toffee, cola cubes and sherbet lemons remain popular, while some treats are harder to find than others.

There is still strong demand for old school sweets in the region. The shop on the main street at Beamish is always full of customers, and Mr Swainston's Emporium in South Shields has seen success over the last year, including the opening of a bigger store and an appearance on BBC's Dragons' Den, where a deal was struck with North East CEO and guest Dragon Jenna Meek.

The new shop is expected to add another destination for retro sweets when it opens in early 2027.
