A popular used car dealership and garage in Kent is set to close after more than 60 years in business. Stade Street Garage in Hythe will shut its doors on June 26, marking the end of a family-run operation that began in 1964.
The site was purchased by Lawrence Elam in 1962 and later passed to his son Jon after Lawrence's death in 1990. Jon's wife Karen took over the business when Jon passed away two years ago, but she is now retiring after 37 years with the company.
According to Kent Online, Karen said: 'Sorry to leave all our customers stranded. I will miss it because it's Jon's - I just feel like the whole business is him and it will be emotional. It's cutting part of Jon but he'll still always be with me in my heart and head.'
The garage specialised in nearly new Ford models and had received glowing reviews from customers. One reviewer said: 'Brilliant garage! ... Karen was super kind and helpful.' Another added: 'Excellent service ... They go out of their way to get the job done.'
Karen reflected on the relationships built over the years: 'I've loved having them all through the years. Customers have become our friends ... I think people liked how we were honest and trustworthy.'
The site is set to become a private dental practice. It is not yet known how many jobs will be lost.
