England World Cup Semi-Final to Fuel 10 Million Extra Pints Sales
England Semi-Final to Boost Pub Sales by 10 Million Pints

England fans are expected to consume up to 10 million extra pints during Wednesday's World Cup semi-final clash with Argentina, delivering a major boost to pubs, bars, and supermarkets. The match, kicking off at 8pm, is forecast to attract up to 26.2 million viewers, according to discount website VoucherCodes.

Record Hospitality Attendance Expected

VoucherCodes estimates that seven million fans—a tournament record—will watch the game in hospitality venues such as pubs, bars, and fan zones. These venues are expected to sell 9.7 million pints, generating £60.5 million in drink sales and an additional £37.8 million from food. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) projects that pubs alone could serve an extra six million pints, representing a 75% surge compared to an average Wednesday in July, when around eight million pints are typically sold.

Economic Impact and Fan Spending

Emma McClarkin, BBPA chief executive, said: “Thanks to the World Cup, we’ve seen millions of extra pints sold off the back of home nations matches. Given the nail-biting stakes, we expect Wednesday to be the most successful night of the tournament, with more than six million extra pints potentially sold – which is a bigger boost than we’d normally see on a Bank Holiday or New Year’s Eve.” She added that the team's performance has brought communities together and boosted pubs nationwide.

England's previous matches have already driven significant spending. The 2-1 win over Norway, inspired by Jude Bellingham, led to a 23% increase in pub and bar spending, according to payment provider Dojo. Transactions spiked 152% ahead of extra time and surged again after the final whistle as fans celebrated.

Supermarket and Retail Boost

An estimated 19.2 million people will watch the game at home or with friends, prompting a £357 million spending spree at supermarkets and shops, VoucherCodes predicts. The bulk of sales will come from food and drink (£238 million), sportswear (£44 million), and electrical items (£25 million). Clair Hughes, savings expert at VoucherCodes, said: “We’re now at that nail-biting point where England might actually win the World Cup. With every win and a step closer to victory, the excitement is growing and fans are becoming increasingly more lenient with their wallets.”

Prime Time Kick-Off Boosts Trade

The 8pm kick-off is England's earliest in the tournament, providing an ideal slot for pub attendance. Many venues have been fully booked for previous matches, and the semi-final is expected to be no different. The BBPA's McClarkin concluded: “The Three Lions have not only delivered on the pitch, they’ve brought fans and communities together, boosted pubs up and down the country, and created some unforgettable memories. Now all they need to do is bring it home!”
