Eastbourne Pier Future in Doubt as Operating Company Liquidated
Eastbourne Pier Future in Doubt After Company Liquidation

The future of a famous UK seaside pier has been thrown into serious doubt after its operating company was forced into compulsory liquidation following a court order. Eastbourne Pier, which opened in 1870, is a Grade II listed Victorian landmark that attracts thousands of tourists annually.

Iconic Attraction at Risk

The pier is known for its traditional architecture and seaside attractions, including amusement arcades, fish and chips shops, and tearooms. It has featured in films such as Agatha Christie's Poirot, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, and Brighton Rock. In 1997, it won the National Piers Society's first-ever "Pier of the Year" award.

Company Collapse

As reported by The Argus, Eastbourne Pier now faces closure after Lions Pier Limited, the operating company, was issued a compulsory winding-up order on Tuesday, May 12. The company's director, Abid Gulzar, is awaiting a criminal fraud trial regarding unrelated water bills, while his other landmark, Hastings Pier, has been declared a frozen asset.

Alongside Manasdeep Singh, Mr Gulzar is accused of fraudulently avoiding £150,000 in water bills at hotels across East Sussex. Both deny the charges.

Uncertain Ownership

If the pier's physical structure is determined to be owned by Lions Pier Limited, the Official Receiver could sell the attraction as part of the liquidation process. However, if Mr Gulzar holds the freehold separately, he may retain control despite the company's collapse.

Council Response

A spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council said: "We are monitoring the situation at Eastbourne Pier very closely. It is an iconic and much-loved seafront attraction, and we hope the Official Receiver can secure an outcome that ensures it remains open and restored for residents, visitors and businesses based on the pier."

"While the pier has always been in private ownership, council officers routinely check its general condition and these checks will continue," the spokesperson added.
