Debenhams, the iconic British department store that closed its last physical outlets in May 2021 after 243 years, has been identified as the retailer Brits most want to see return to the high street. According to analysis by Liquidation Centre, the brand generates an average of 499,000 monthly searches in the UK, more than 7.5 times the search volume of its nearest rival.
Nostalgia for a lost high street staple
The British high street has suffered significant losses in recent years, with chains such as Woolworths and Blockbuster disappearing. However, Debenhams stands out as the most-missed retailer. The department store was known for its fashion, beauty, and homeware offerings, and its closure marked the end of a centuries-old retail era.
Despite the physical stores shutting down, the Debenhams brand has not vanished. In 2021, online fashion giant Boohoo purchased the brand for £55 million and subsequently retired its own name in favour of Debenhams. However, Boohoo did not revive the brick-and-mortar stores, leaving Debenhams as an online-only retailer.
Why Debenhams remains popular
The high search volumes partly reflect the brand's continued online presence. Liquidation Centre director Richard Hunt commented: “The combination of failing to adapt to shifting consumer habits towards online shopping alongside the financial impact of Brexit and the pandemic contributed towards Debenhams financial strain. However, their issues began years prior to these events, with the company carrying unsustainable debts due to poor financial decisions.”
Hunt added: “Their online-only comeback will be exciting for many fans, but it also serves as a stark reminder of their failure to compete effectively on the high street amid a changing market.”
Unlikely return to physical stores
Despite public desire for a physical comeback, the chief executive of Debenhams has stated that the brand will remain “Britain's online department store”. This suggests that the nostalgic calls for a return to the high street are unlikely to be answered, as the retailer focuses on its digital presence under Boohoo's ownership.
The data underscores the enduring affection for Debenhams, even as the retail landscape continues to evolve. While shoppers may long for the days of browsing its aisles, the future of the brand lies firmly online.
