Cammy Devlin is torn over lucrative offers from Major League Soccer, Turkey, and England, as well as his emotional attachment to Hearts, as he weighs up his future. The midfielder, whose contract expired at Tynecastle at the end of the season, now has four options on the table: from America, the English Championship, the Turkish Super Lig, and improved terms to stay in Edinburgh.
Hearts Sporting Director Hopes for Closure
Jambos sporting director Graeme Jones stated last Tuesday that he hoped to have closure on the situation soon. However, the Australian international, who turned 28 today and is currently in the United States preparing for the World Cup, does not want to rush a decision at this crucial stage of his career.
Devlin's Emotional Connection to Hearts
Devlin has not ruled out remaining with Derek McInnes' side after a standout season in the capital, during which Hearts came within minutes of winning the Premiership title. A source close to the player told Record Sport: "Hearts are a great club, and clubs are made by people. Graeme Jones and Derek McInnes are good people. They have been fantastic, completely understanding, and very patient. While there are four clubs interested and Hearts are bottom of the financial trail, Cammy is torn between financial security and his love of Hearts Football Club. If it was just based on finances, Cammy would be gone."
Devlin's Hearts Career and International Ambitions
Devlin has made 172 appearances for the Jambos since signing for a bargain £30,000 from Wellington Phoenix in the summer of 2021. The fans' favourite played 33 times last season despite missing two months through injury. He made his first Australia appearance in two years as a late substitute in Saturday's 1-1 World Cup warm-up draw with Switzerland. Now he is hoping for game time on the biggest stage of his career, having been an unused substitute in all of Australia's World Cup games in 2022.
Speaking last week, Tynecastle sporting director Jones said: "Discussions are ongoing with Cammy's representatives, and they're positive discussions. I would hope that we will have some form of closure in respect of him staying or leaving in the coming week or so. It's fantastic news he's made the Australia squad; that was so important to him and for us. We're delighted and proud that he has made that."
Hearts' Summer Recruitment Drive
Meanwhile, Hearts are closing in on making defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott their fourth summer signing after agreeing a fee with National League champions York City, believed to be in the region of £750,000. The former Tottenham youngster, who had loan spells in Scotland with Dunfermline and Dundee, was a key figure for the Minstermen as they secured their return to the English Football League. The Jambos also hope to confirm the arrival of striker Amadou Ba-Sy from Ligue 3 side Rouen after agreeing a fee understood to be close to £200,000. They have also agreed a deal for Versailles midfielder Tom Renaud and are closing in on further signings. The Jambos stepped up their summer recruitment drive last week with the signing of Calvin Miller from Falkirk, joining St Johnstone forward Josh McPake and Lincoln City defender MJ Kamson-Kamara.
