Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Bristol to Close After 52 Years

The Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Bristol is set to close next month after the last major retailer, Superdrug, confirmed it will permanently shut its doors. The closure marks the end of more than 52 years of retail operations at the mall, which first opened in 1974 as the first and largest retail venue in Bristol.

Superdrug's last trading day will be Saturday, July 11, 2026. Staff at the branch confirmed the closure and thanked customers. All patient details from the pharmacy will be transferred to Knowle Pharmacy, located a few doors down on Wells Road.

Demolition Plans Move Forward

Plans to demolish the site, including the multi-storey car park, bingo venue, and snooker hall, are now set to proceed, according to reports. Redcatch Quarter, the owner of the shopping centre, has stated that demolition of the entire site will begin later this year.

The Superdrug branch was the last major retailer operating within the centre after the Iceland supermarket shut in January 2026. Security for the site will be increased due to concerns about break-ins, theft, and anti-social behaviour prior to demolition.

Redevelopment into Residential Space

The development site encompasses a vast area from Wells Road to Redcatch Park. Plans for the transformation of the shopping site into flats were unveiled in 2018. Initially, 850 flats in ten-storey blocks by the park were proposed, but this was challenged by residents. The decision was instead taken to create smaller-scale tower blocks on Wells Road, with townhouses located near Redcatch Park.
