A rare 50p coin could be worth 160 times its face value, and it is not the well-known Kew Gardens or Atlantic Salmon designs. Coin collectors are urging the public to check their change for certain Royal Shield 50p coins that can fetch between £40 and £80 each.
What Makes These 50p Coins So Valuable?
The coins in question are Non-Intended for Circulation (NIFC) Royal Shield 50p pieces. According to TikTok account @uk.coin.hunt, which has 468,900 followers, these coins were never meant for general circulation. Instead, they were pulled from BUNC (Brilliant Uncirculated) sets and proof sets produced by the Royal Mint for collectors.
The NIFC years include 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2021. The rarest Shield 50p in circulation is the 2017 issue, with only 1.8 million minted, but it is not as expensive as the NIFC years. The TikTok voiceover noted: "I've got 2011 Shields, the 2009 and 2010, so this one is a proof as you can see. And these are worth a lot of money."
How Much Are They Worth?
The value of these coins depends on their condition. The TikTok account stated: "These sell for £40-£80 each, depending on the condition but obviously the brand new ones will just go for a tiny bit less because of the quality of them." This means a 50p coin could be worth up to 160 times its face value of 50 pence.
The voiceover added that people might spend these coins without realising their worth: "People might spend it as they don't really look for dates and might not know about them."
The Royal Shield Design: A Jigsaw Puzzle
The Royal Shield 50p coin features a unique "jigsaw puzzle" design by Matthew Dent. When all UK coins from 1p to 50p are placed together, they form the complete Royal Shield of Arms. First issued in 2008 to replace the seated Britannia design, the Shield 50p is common for most years, but the NIFC years are rare because they were not minted for circulation.

Other Rare 50p Coins
While the Royal Shield NIFC coins are valuable, the rarest 50p in circulation remains the Atlantic Salmon, with only 200,000 minted. The Kew Gardens 50p, issued in 2009, has 210,000 pieces in circulation. Both are highly sought after by collectors due to their low mintage compared to standard 50p designs, which often run into tens of millions.
