A TikTok user has revealed the harsh reality of playing scratchcards after spending £600 on National Lottery scratchcards and winning just £385. The man, known online as jax4154, documented his experiment in a video that has since gone viral, showing the stark contrast between his 'loser pile' and 'winner pile'. His biggest single win was just £50.
Jax explained that he bought 120 Millionaire Maker scratchcards as part of his ongoing series, noting that out of 700 scratchcards purchased in total, the largest win had been £100. He expressed scepticism about the likelihood of winning big, despite hearing tales of hefty prizes. 'I do this so you don't have to,' he said, aiming to demonstrate the high risk of losing money.
The video attracted widespread attention, with viewers sharing their thoughts. One commented, 'Well done. It's a mug's game,' while another noted, 'Scratchcards win ratio is about one in four. If you take away wins where you just get the scratchcard cost back, it drops to one in 20.' The National Lottery website states that odds vary by game, but for £5 scratchcards, the chance of winning is roughly one in four, including cards that only return the purchase price.
In line with responsible gambling measures, the National Lottery limits scratchcard purchases to a maximum of 10 per transaction. Jax's experiment serves as a cautionary tale, with the TikToker urging people to 'keep away' from scratchcards due to the high risk of significant losses.
