Boca Raton Hooters Forced to Close as Landlord Ends Lease Agreement

One of Hooters' most renowned and socially vibrant locations is set to shutter its doors permanently later this month, following a decision by the property landlord to refuse lease renewal. The Boca Raton branch, which has cultivated a massive online following and a loyal customer base, will cease operations on February 22, leaving fans and employees heartbroken.

Profitable Location Faces Unexpected Closure

According to Chris Torelli, the Managing Partner and Director of Merchandising at this Hooters franchise, the closure is not due to financial struggles. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Torelli emphasised that the Boca Raton location was both healthy and profitable, with the shutdown solely attributed to the landlord's refusal to renew the lease. It's easy to draw conclusions, Torelli remarked, highlighting that the decision was unrelated to the restaurant's performance.

Social Media Success and Employee Impact

The Boca Raton Hooters gained significant fame through its active Instagram presence, amassing an impressive 137,000 followers by featuring dancing Hooters Girls. This social media strategy not only drew in hungry patrons but also created a tight-knit community. Torelli, who manages the popular Instagram account, confirmed that the page will remain active despite the physical closure. You're not going to shut down a page with 137,000 followers, he stated, noting plans to collaborate with staff from other stores or host alumni appearances to keep the online engagement alive.

The closure will directly impact 55 employees, many of whom are college students. While some may transfer to the nearest Hooters branch, others lack that option, adding to the emotional toll. Torelli described the location as more than just a restaurant, comparing it to the beloved TV show Cheers for its welcoming atmosphere. Everybody's a little bit upset, he added, reflecting the sadness among regulars and staff.

Landlord's Pattern and Future of the Property

The property is owned by the hedge fund group Sterling Organization, which has a history of not renewing leases for businesses in the area. Torelli revealed that over the years, none of the businesses have been allowed to renew their leases once they expired. Currently, only a Moe's and Five Guys remain in the vicinity, and with their leases also set to end, the area could soon be left with little but concrete. One by one the leases end, and there's no option to renew, Torelli explained, doubting that another restaurant will take Hooters' place.

As the closure date approaches, the Hooters family in Boca Raton is exploring relocation possibilities, though no permanent plans have been finalised. The Daily Mail has reached out to Sterling Organizations for further comment on the situation.
