B&M Shoppers Discover Store Name Meaning After 48 Years

B&M shoppers have been left stunned after discovering what the store's name actually means, a revelation that has taken some 48 years to come to light. The popular variety retailer, known for offering budget-friendly home goods, has a history that many customers are only now learning.

The True Meaning Behind B&M

B&M Retail Limited, trading as B&M, was founded in 1978 by Malcolm Billington and Brian Mayman. The first store opened in Blackpool, initially under the name Billington & Mayman, which was a combination of the founders' surnames. This was soon shortened to the now-familiar B&M.

Many shoppers had assumed the name stood for something like "Bargain Madness" or "Bargains & More," but the real story is rooted in the founders' identities. The revelation was shared on TikTok by user Jo Jo Belle, who posted a screenshot of the company's history, prompting widespread surprise.

Company Growth and Evolution

B&M was acquired by Simon and Bobby Arora in December 2004 from Phildrew Investments, at which point the company operated just 21 stores. By 2010, the business moved to a new head office and a 620,000 square foot distribution centre in Speke, Liverpool. Two years later, it opened its 300th store. In 2013, private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier and Rice acquired a significant stake in the company.

Today, B&M boasts over 700 stores across the UK and Northern Ireland, employing more than 35,000 staff. The company states that it attracts over 4 million customers each week, offering top branded products at low prices.

Shopper Reactions

When the news spread on Facebook, one shopper commented, "I always thought it stood for Bargains & More." Another said, "You learn something new every day." The revelation has sparked conversations among loyal customers who have shopped at B&M for years without knowing the origin of its name.

B&M continues to be a staple for bargain hunters, and the story behind its name adds a layer of history to the shopping experience.
