B&M confirms closure dates for two flagship stores

B&M has confirmed that two of its flagship stores will close this month as part of a major business overhaul. The Carmarthen store will close on August 15 and move to a new location on August 22, a former B&Q unit that is one of the largest retail spaces in the town. The Sunderland store will close on August 16 for refurbishment and reopen on August 22.

Closures and Relocations

On its website, B&M apologised for any inconvenience, stating: "In order to complete the final phase, it will be necessary for a closure period." The retailer explained that the expansion works are designed to offer shoppers a "bigger and better B&M experience".

These closures follow similar upgrades at B&M stores in Pentwyn, Stockport, and Leicester. The company also launched new branches in Norfolk, Hertfordshire, and Devon earlier this year. Additionally, B&M is set to open a new mega-store inside a former Debenhams in Stirling, expected later this year.

Technology Upgrade Across Stores

The company recently announced it is launching "modernised" tech across 790 stores, with new point-of-sale (POS) hardware and software to improve operations for customers and colleagues. Partnering with technology specialist PMC, the transformation programme aims to "improve operational agility, speed up transactions and enhance the customer experience". This is part of a seven-year-long relationship between the two businesses.

The overhaul will replace B&M's till systems with "a more reliable and standardised platform", promising increased uptime, improved functionality, and reduced checkout friction. The roll-out began in January 2026 and is expected to be complete this month, covering all 790 UK stores.

David Laithwaite, B&M implementation services manager, said: "PMC have proven experience with delivering POS solutions. Their collaboration and seamless coordination with our other service providers and B&M staff have been exemplary. The synergy in communication and a joined-up working approach across the board has significantly enhanced our operational efficiency, enabling remarkable progress with this project."
