Autumn is the perfect time for a toasted sandwich, and having a reliable toastie maker can make all the difference. After testing 15 models, we've rounded up the best options for every budget and style, from stovetop to microwave.
Our top budget pick is the George Home textured deep-fill sandwich toaster, offering great value. For the ultimate experience, the Dualit double contact toaster delivers exceptional results. The Morphy Richards Mico toastie maker is ideal for microwaves, while the ProCook stovetop sandwich toaster excels on the hob.
We tested each machine with a filling of grated mozzarella and mature cheddar, plus tuna for a healthier twist, on mayo-coated sourdough. We measured heat-up time, cooking time, power consumption, handle and exterior temperature, and internal sandwich temperature, plus ease of cleaning.
The Breville two-portion model stood out for its removable non-stick plates, which made cleanup easy, and its even cooking. It heated up in just over four minutes and cooked the toastie in nine minutes, with a cool handle at 30°C. However, the 'deep fill' plates struggled to contain the generous filling, and no additional plates are available.
All tested machines were either returned or donated to Gratitude Upcycle in Barnet to support the community.
