Shoppers are being reminded that supermarkets will have different opening hours on Bank Holiday Monday, with many stores operating reduced hours on August 31. Opening times for Aldi, Asda, Lidl, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose are listed below, but some stores may vary, so customers are urged to check details for their local branch before heading out.
Aldi and Asda hours
Aldi stores across England and Wales will be open from 8am until 8pm, while stores in Scotland and Northern Ireland will operate their usual opening hours. Data from last year's August bank holiday weekend shows that 8am to 9am and 7pm to 8pm were the quietest times to shop. Rachel Geary, communications director at Aldi UK, said: "Whether shoppers are stocking up for a barbecue, getting together with family and friends or picking up some last-minute essentials, we want to make their bank holiday shop as easy as possible. For anyone looking to beat the bank holiday rush, heading to stores first thing in the morning or later in the evening is likely to mean a quieter shop."
The majority of Asda stores will operate reduced hours, with most open from 8am until 10pm. For example, Asda Benton, Gosforth, Byker and Boldon will be open from 8am to 10pm, but some stores may vary.
Lidl, M&S and Morrisons
Lidl says opening times will vary across the country, with many shops operating reduced hours. A Lidl spokesperson said: "Our store opening hours for the Summer Bank Holiday are as follows: All our stores in Scotland and those inside the M25 will remain open as normal. Most stores outside the M25 and in Wales will operate under slightly reduced hours of 08:00 – 20:00 (8am-8pm). We encourage customers to check their local store's opening hours on the online store finder or through the Lidl Plus app before they make their journey."
M&S stores in England and Wales may operate reduced hours. The Silverlink Wallsend store is showing as 8.30am to 7pm, Northumberland Street in Newcastle is 9am to 6pm, and the Metrocentre store in Gateshead is open from 9am to 7pm. Morrisons stores in England and Wales will open from 7am to 8pm, with stores at Collingwood Centre Tynemouth, Hillheads Road Whitley Bay, Ocean Road South Shields and Shields Road Byker all open from 7am to 8pm.
Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose
Most Sainsbury's stores in England and Wales will open from 7am to 8pm, and convenience stores will be open from 7am to 11pm. Stores on Newstead Drive in Whitley Bay, Heaton Newcastle and Manor Walks Shopping Centre in Cramlington will operate from 7am to 8pm. Most of the larger Tesco stores in England and Wales will open from 8am until 6pm, with Tesco Extra in North Shields, the South Shields Superstore and Gateshead Trinity Square Extra all closing at 6pm.
Waitrose opening times will vary across the country, with many stores operating reduced hours. The Ponteland store will open until 6pm, while the Jesmond store will open until 10pm.
